چکیده
i Numerical modelling of the growth of offshore sand waves Preface This thesis is my final work carried out for the double degree Master of Science programme in Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at the Delft University of Technology and the National University of Singapore. The study was carried out at Deltares and covers various modelling aspects of the growth of offshore sand waves. During the past ten months, I have learned a great deal about the interesting and dynamic world of sand waves. More importantly however, I have learned about myself. The many ups and downs, much like walking over a sand wave field, led to experiences of joy, distress, hope and finally satisfaction. I am grateful for all the guidance that I have received from my graduation committee members. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Robert, my daily supervisor, for the inspiring talks and instructive feedback. In addition, I would like to thank Bas and Roderik for all the knowledge and guidance they have given me. Furthermore, many thanks to Astrid for her critical and useful remarks, which helped broaden my understanding. I would also like to thank professor Stive, professor Cheong, S.K. and Tim for their constructive feedback. Moreover, I would like to express my gratitude to various people at Deltares who helped me during my thesis. Thanks to Qinghua Ye, Adri Mourits, Bert Jagers and Pieter Koen Tonnon for all the help with the Delft3D model. Thanks to Kees Sloff and Erik Mosselman for the extensive discussions on the bed slope effect. Thanks to all the friends that have supported me during my studies. I am grateful to have made such good friends, both in Delft and in Singapore. Thanks to the fellow students at Deltares for all the good laughs and motivational boosts. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the infinite support and the amazing amount of patience that my parents, my sister and Lodewijk have given me. Words cannot describe my gratefulness. iii Numerical modelling of the growth of offshore sand wave s

Modelling offshore sand wave evolution
We present a two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological numerical model describing the behaviour of offshore sand waves. The model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load formula. The water movement is coupled to the sediment transport equation by a seabed evolution equation. Using this model, we investigate the evolution of sand wav...
متن کاملModelling offshore sand waves
Offshore activities often encounter large scale sand patterns, such as sand waves. Sand waves are offshore bed forms occurring at water depths of 10 to 50 m. Their wavelengths can lead up to 500 m and their heights are typically several metres. Furthermore, sand waves have been shown to migrate, with typical velocities of up to metres per year. These dynamic sand waves decrease the least naviga...
متن کاملSimulating offshore sand waves
Sand waves form a prominent regular pattern in the offshore seabeds of sandy shallow seas and pose a threat to a range of offshore activities. A two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological simulation model describing the behaviour of these sand waves has been developed. The simulation model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load form...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
متن کاملExperimental and Numerical Study of Tension Bearing Capacity of Circular Skirted Foundations Resting on Sand Bed
Skirted foundations are an appropriate alternative to deep foundations in onshore and offshore structures, which have the ability to withstand uplift loads, are also easy to be installed. The tensile performance of skirted foundations on sand was studied by physical and numerical modeling. Laboratory tests were carried out on small-scale foundation models with peripheral skirts. Numerical model...
